A “Make it work” moment for Big Guns

I’m taking a drastically different approach with the cabinet. I don’t want to spend any more money or increase the rebuild timeline with this cabinet. Instead of trying to make it look like Big Guns (which is nearly impossible at this point and would require starting over from scratch) I’ve decided to treat it like a painting. I’m going back into the cabinet with approaches that I’ve used with great success on the background panels for Grocer paintings.

This will be a somewhat time consuming process as well but it will be a great change of pace. My rough plan goes like this:

  • paint red stencils on asap but offset
  • partially sand and scrape off additional paint.
  • bring in deep blacks and transparent wipe-offs
  • paint back in additional color (bring in color and elements from translite and/or playfield
  • obscure new color
  • lay down ‘BIG GUNS’ element on top in style of translite
  • clearcoat

It’s certainly not going to be restored to original but I can make it beautiful and still in line with the machines overall aesthetic.

I was so upset when my plans fell apart, and I would still prefer to have had it restored to original. But I’m excited to go through my painterly creative process and make something I won’t feel bad about. indeed if I do it well, it could look pretty amazing.

Allison said it was my Tim Gunn moment. No more trips to Mood for me, time to make it work. So that’s what I’m doing. Using what I’ve got on hand to make this pinball cabinet the best it can be, and staying true to myself 🙂
