    Red Beet

This gnarly beet painting by The Grocer always pleased me, and it’s location was really nice for viewing while headed northwest on Milwaukee avenue toward Western.

    The Grocer: first works

In the summer of 2007, I began making original fruit and veggie themed paste-ups and installing them on derelict walls in Chicago under the moniker “The Grocer.” At the time, these acrylic paintings on paper gave me a cathartic outlet that the “serious” paintings I was doing at the time didn’t provide. Below are some…

    Rejoice and The Grocer collab

Rejoice and I decided we should do a collaborative piece up on the iconic Milwuakee & Grand building. He would first put up his faces in a form akin to scoops of ice cream, and then I’d come back the next day and paste the cherries on top. I love how it turned out.

  • Row of Apples

    Row of Apples

Process and final images of a row of apples by The Grocer, painted and pasted at Pontiac Grill in Wicker Park, Chicago in June 2007.

  • Cherry

    Cherry

I love cherries, so it seemed obvious for The Grocer to paste up a sweet cherry. This was painted in two parts (stem, fruit) and pasted on an old window on Milwaukee avenue in Wicker Park. I ended up revisiting this building a few times over the years. “Vegan” was a prolific tagger at that…

  • Avocados

    Avocados

The Grocer’s big avocados were made as two separate paintings, overlapped when pasted. I had this spot picked out on Halsted near 18th but i was afraid the paste-up wouldn’t stick on the weathered wood, so a couple of nights prior to going up with the Avocados I went out with a roller and painted…

  • Kiwi

    Kiwi

This cut kiwi was one of the longest riding Grocer paintings, staying up here across from Sultan’s market just off Division for over 3 years. I used a squeegee on a pole to paste it up at the top of this board-up arch, and i guess it was pretty enough and high enough that nobody…

  • Early watermelons

    Early watermelons

I love watermelon—everything about it. I only wish the full watermelon pictured below would have stayed up longer, it was gone in less than 2 days. The cut watermelon was pasted high up on a scaffold board in a warehouse district on the near west side, and it was there till the construction was over.

  • Tomatoes on the vine

    Tomatoes on the vine

The Grocer’s punchy little bunch of tomatoes looked really lovely in the alley.
