Space Mission: Before and After Restoration

I’ve been chomping at the bit to post a “before and after” series for this machine, but i wanted to wait till i had it completely finished. I worked on this restore for about 6 months (including cure time for the clear coat). Electro mechanical pinball purists will hate some of what i did, but I’m quite happy with the modifications that i’ve made. Here’s the major stuff:

  • The playfield was planking and flaking pretty badly across the board, so i touched it up very tastefully and clear coated the playfield. The end result is a much improved look and a dead flat playfield that is mega fun to play.
  • Flippers and pop bumpers were completely rebuilt, and everything visible was cleaned and polished.
  • Chimes were cleaned and polished and rebuilt with new rubber and plastic parts.
  • All the opaque red posts were replaced with translucent red “fin” posts to brighten up the playfield. I think the fin posts are a great match for the space themed artwork.
  • Replaced the opaque white eject hole plastic with transparent red and added lights from behind.

At some point i still need to clean up the score reels, and i will likely do a cabinet repaint later down the line. In this process i focused on what really counts – the parts the play!

Thanks for looking 🙂
