    Finished painting Space Mission

Finished all touch up restoration painting on the playfield. As you can see in the before and after, it’s a pretty dramatic change. It’s not perfect by any stretch but damn it’s good. Next up for this one is leveling the inserts and clear coating. Should be an adventure.

    Space Mission playfield touch-ups

Progress over the last week has been slow, but i finished the blue touch ups for Space Mission and painted yellow stencils on the Big Guns backbox. Again the stencils peeled off a lot of paint but that’s ok because I expected it and plan to finish the same way I did the cab. For…

  • Space Mission touch-ups: blue

    Space Mission touch-ups: blue

Started touching up the blue tonight. Managed to get it matched almost exactly and got ¾ of the playfield done. In the picture above the left side isn’t done and the right is. I’m doing all the planking, pits, and wear so there’s a ton of ground to cover but holy crap it’s gonna be…

Space Mission touch ups: teal complete

Wasn’t planning on it but it was so nice outside so I decided to do a bit more painting. When I do it at night I have to shut the door because the spotlight attracts bugs. Turned out great, but there are two more colors left to touch up, and then probably black a bit.…

    Black touch-ups

Removed the mylar adhesive using the flour method (pictured up top). Basically you soak the adhesive area with goo gone and then sprinkle it with flour. Wait a few minutes and it rolls up in the flour. Pretty simple. Compared to removing the full playfield mylar on Big Guns this was nothing. Then I cleaned…

Removing mylar from around the pops

I’m trying to finish touching up the Space Mission playfield so I can level the inserts and clear the playfield. I’ve been doing little bits here and there. Tonight I had the hair dryer out to help dry the polycrylic for Big Guns so I decided it was time to finally remove the mylar circles…

  • Final round of touch-ups

    Final round of touch-ups

Touched up black and the darker turquoise in some if the worst areas, and black around all of the inserts. I attempted a few spots with yellow but it’s just too difficult to match the faded and weathered tone, so I decided to not press my luck.

  • Touched up some red paint

    Touched up some red paint

Spent some time carefully touching up some of the worst wear spots on Space Mission. Red was standing out the worst so I started in some hidden spots and kept going. I should be using an airbrush but my experience as a painter helps me out. It’s not like I can make this playfield worse!…
