Row of Apples
Process and final images of a row of apples by The Grocer, painted and pasted at Pontiac Grill in Wicker Park, Chicago in June 2007.

Cherry
I love cherries, so it seemed obvious for The Grocer to paste up a sweet cherry. This was painted in two parts (stem, fruit) and pasted on an old window on Milwaukee avenue in Wicker Park. I ended up revisiting this building a few times over the years. “Vegan” was a prolific tagger at that…

Avocados
The Grocer’s big avocados were made as two separate paintings, overlapped when pasted. I had this spot picked out on Halsted near 18th but i was afraid the paste-up wouldn’t stick on the weathered wood, so a couple of nights prior to going up with the Avocados I went out with a roller and painted…

Kiwi
This cut kiwi was one of the longest riding Grocer paintings, staying up here across from Sultan’s market just off Division for over 3 years. I used a squeegee on a pole to paste it up at the top of this board-up arch, and i guess it was pretty enough and high enough that nobody…

Tomatoes on the vine
The Grocer’s punchy little bunch of tomatoes looked really lovely in the alley.

Radishes
The Grocer’s little bunch of radishes went up on Damen avenue near a little cupcake bakery that I liked, i think it was called Sweet Cakes.

Carrots
This bunch of carrots was painted and pasted up by The Grocer on Halsted near 18th in Pilsen in June 2007. This is one of my all-time favorite paintings in its street context. A few years later I created a version of this painting on panel for a friend.

Eggplants
One of The Grocer’s earliest, and never one of my favorites. I pasted this near Chicago avenue next to a great Rejoice piece, but i think it would’ve been better on a different colored wall. I revisited the subject of eggplants in depth later on a large panel for a show.
