    Big Guns even closer

At this point i have everything back on the playfield with the exception of the flipper bats, large wireforms that catch the cannon blasts, and the lighted panel that goes behind in the back. It’s crazy that at this point i can write a list of things remaining to do and it fits in a…

  • Repopulating is the fun part

    Repopulating is the fun part

Repopulating the playfield is very satisfying. It’s fun to see all the new and cleaned and polished parts go back on. I’ve got the entire first layer done with the exception of the back center. As usual, there were some difficulties here and there. The main issue was that I discovered a few playfield post…

  • Big Guns board work

    Big Guns board work

Replaced the blown TIP102 on the board and also fixed the backbox GI. Everything tested out good. The GI fix was a bit of a hack but I can make it right later (it’s not dangerous). Waxed the playfield twice, replaced topside light sockets, and put the remaining bulbs in. Touched up the apron and…

  • Soldering night

    Soldering night

Did a bunch of soldering on Big Guns. Both front flippers rebuilt and reinstalled, top side mechs rebuilt and reinstalled. Resoldered some bad connections on the topside GI as well. It’s basically ready to be repopulated.

    Slow and steady motion

I haven’t had much time to work on pinball, but tonight i did a couple of things. I laid out all of the switches and parts for the front flippers so they are ready to wire up. I also sanded and deglossed all of the low spots on Space Mission. That was tedius work but…

  • Big Guns flipper rebuilds

    Big Guns flipper rebuilds

Top flippers rebuilt and installed, upgraded to fliptronics style thanks to Vid’s guide on Pinside. I’ve got the old flipper bats in upside down to keep everything in place for now. Two more flipper rebuilds to go! Unfortunately the next ones have more switches. I wish I was faster with these!

  • Teardown diagram drawings

    Teardown diagram drawings

I like drawing diagrams. Here are some from my recent teardown. I found that drawing it out is easier than taking photos because it’s always difficult to see what’s going on in photos. This way i number every connection and tape labels on the playfield wires. Much nicer than photos.

  • A big weekend for Big Guns

A big weekend for Big Guns

A lot has happened since my last post. I’ll break it down by category. BackboxI finished my last coat of semi-gloss and completely repopulated the backbox. Reinstalled the boards and connectors, the speakers, trims, and translite. This thing is enormous and heavy, but i managed to get it installed on top of the cabinet by…

  • Big Guns backbox stripes complete

Finished painting Big Guns backbox stripes. Three coats of semi gloss to go, then I will repopulate it. Also completed the remaining board/wiring repairs for everything that goes inside this. I should have it back on top of the cabinet and the machine powered up by Sunday! I also spent some more time evaluating the…
