  • Spinner woes and a stop gap solution

Spinner woes and a stop gap solution

I used epoxy first, then super glue to try and fix the spinner, and I reinstalled it into the game but it took all of two balls to destroy it. I’m placing an order with PBR this week for a bunch of stuff including a generic spinner replacement. Surf Champ is one of my favorite…

  • Final round of touch-ups

    Final round of touch-ups

Touched up black and the darker turquoise in some if the worst areas, and black around all of the inserts. I attempted a few spots with yellow but it’s just too difficult to match the faded and weathered tone, so I decided to not press my luck.

  • Cabinet repair and prime

    Cabinet repair and prime

It’s not perfect, but I’m really pleased with the patch job I gave the Big Guns cabinet. Sanded the KwikWood out today and managed to get it primed. There are one or two places I need to fill some more, then I can finally start repainting it.

  • Touched up some red paint

    Touched up some red paint

Spent some time carefully touching up some of the worst wear spots on Space Mission. Red was standing out the worst so I started in some hidden spots and kept going. I should be using an airbrush but my experience as a painter helps me out. It’s not like I can make this playfield worse!…

  • Alcohol and magic eraser

    Alcohol and magic eraser

With previous playfields I haven’t found much success with this method, but it sure worked on Space Mission. It pulled up tons of metal filing dust that was hanging out in the cracks where the board is planking. Very excited. As you can see, there is so much wear around the super bonus advance and…

  • Cleaning the Space Mission playfield

    Cleaning the Space Mission playfield

Tonight I thoroughly cleaned the Space Mission playfield with naphtha and a microfiber towel. This playfield has a lot of wear. Clearly the previous owner played with a pitted rusty ball for many years and there was very little wax to clean up so it has been unprotected for a long time. I’m not sure…

  • Broken spinner, faulty lamp, more wood filler

Broken spinner, faulty lamp, more wood filler

Stepped up to Surf Champ to find that the spinner was broken, which probably happened when my littlest son was playing earlier today. I tried to reattach with epoxy, but I’m not hopeful. That spinner gets pounded. I’m going to look this up on Pinside tomorrow and see what my options are. While I had…

  • Tumbling the hardware from Space Mission

Tumbling the hardware from Space Mission

Sunday night I threw all of the hardware from the top side of Space Mission into the vibrating tumbler. Tonight it was time to pull them out. The results from this process always amaze me. Many of the posts were black with grime and metal filing dust when I put them in and after two…

  • Added some light feature mods to Blackout

Added some light feature mods to Blackout

Lighted flipper buttons: replaced the white buttons with transparent red flipper buttons and added red flex head LEDs tied into the coin door lights to make them glow. I used speaker wire to run it as cleanly as possible and I’m happy with how it turned out. Eject hole: also replaced the white eject hole…
